A writer takes a pen

The first glimmer that I had a propensity for writing came in grade school when the teacher handed out paper lined with blue lines and asked us what to do. The class had only seen paper lined with alternating pink and blue lines. Capital letters went from blue to blue while lower case went only to the pink line.

I immediately knew that writing would no longer be constrained by pink lines, and so much more could be written on the narrower spaces between blue lines.

It was a revelation. It was probably the first time I internalized the adulation I received for my astute observation.

Sixty years later, I have yet to hit my stride regarding writing. This website is intended to prod me forward.

Photography was always latent

The first camera I owned was given to me by Ed of Ed’s Camera Corner in Multnomah Village, circa mid-1960s. I took that camera to NYC, DC and Montreal, though I didn’t shoot a lot of film.

My interest in photography led to participating in a communal photo lab in Eugene for about half a year. I learned the basics of darkroom work, though also didn’t make full use of the opportunity.

I moved up from Pentax K1000 to Nikon sometime in the 90s. When digital cameras came on the market, I swore I wouldn’t want to own one.

Today, everyone owns a digital camera. Well, anyone with a cellphone.
